Dear Blog,

You have been forgotten! I am so sorry my friend, but life got in the way and this hobby/outlet got pushed farther and farther down the list of to do’s. I am sorry, but I am not promising to make amends, largely because writing this blog is suppose to be fun not a chore. Anyway moving on..

WE GOT ENGAGED! John proposed to me whilst on our August Love Michigan Vacation, that means we have now been engaged for over 5 months (pretty much the same time frame I have been away from the blog) with our wedding scheduled for September 8th, 2012!  Image

The wedding is pretty much planned and to be honest, I am already tired of the planning so please, hurry up September. Oh, and as you can tell we had our engagement photos taken back in October. We had Janelle Ashley Photography do our engagement session and we are pumped to see her again in September for our wedding photos.

What else is new you ask? WE GOT A DOG! Tali (remember she is our cat) is none to happy but we finally got a dog. His name is Charlie and he is a 5 year old yellow lab mix (I am sure to be writing lots about him in coming posts) that we rescued from an amazing shelter north of Muskegon.

Image

The photo above is one that I saw online before we met him, isn’t he such a handsome basketball loving blonde!

Charlie is really intelligent! This photo made our Christmas Card and was taken just before we sent Charlie off to ‘school’ for a month, so he could learn to let John and I be the alpha dogs in our home. He has been home for a couple of months, and we are so pleased with him and the training we all received.

Anyone else ever forgotten about a hobby they really enjoy? I have a feeling that many blog writers go in spurts with their blogs, I was just on a really long no writing spurt.

I will be back to write more! So stay tuned.

21 Day Challenge Update

Don’t worry my friends, I’ve been keeping up with Kayla’s 21 Day Challenge

So for day 10 the challenge wanted us in a Closet Orphan (click here to check out the others). Now since I wore my closet orpahns last week… I pulled out a seldom worn but no way in heck getting rid of gingham tank. I dont wear it much because it fits a goofy, therefore I threw a belt over it.

Day 10

Outfit Breakdown: Cardigan (New York & Company), Gingham tank (Land’s End), Slacks (Gap), Sandals (Born), Belt (99 cent thrift belt)

And then today was the wear a skirt or dress challenge (check out the cuter outfits here)

Day 11

Outfit Breakdown:Jacket (thrifted), skirt (Eileen Fischer), Wedge Sandals (Hush Puppies)

Oh, and if your curious what I’ve been up to, let me just say that my fingertips are all blistered and I’ve got a new frame above my mantel (currently in its Goodwill glory). I’ll put out the update this weekend on my new mantelscape.

Lazy Sunday

This weekend has been uber lazy, and great! Honestly it may have been the only weekend all summer where we didn’t really  have anything planned. I did watch a few Glee Episodes (I’m getting geared for a new Glee in September, hopefully), we hit up the farmers market (John got me some gorgeous delilahs) and we helped a friend move into his new home today.

Anyway, I haven’t much to say after such a great relaxing weekend. I did want to let you know that even though I haven’t showered yet today, I did participate in the 21 Day Challenge to “layer accessories”.

I grabbed this accessory photo in the car on the way to help move.

See told you we were in the car.

Outfit Breakdown: Black Tee (Marshall’s), Un-shown skort (Sonoma (Kohl’s) via Goodwill), Necklaces; Bird (Forever 21), Large turquoise (Gift from John), Small turquoise (borrowed over 7 years ago)

So anyway, sorry for the lame outfit for the challenge today and the bad picture, but helping a friend move plus laid back day equals skort (cuter than shorts and carrying boxes approved) and a black tee. At least I wore 3 necklaces to make up for it.

Anyone else pumped for new Glee episodes?

We had a wicked storm yesterday afternoon… I made John watch Romancing The Stone. Who else loves this epic movie?

Wanna check out the folks who actually got dressed today?

End of Summer Challenge to Myself: Day Two

End of Summer Challenge to Myself (dress in something I have hardly worn all summer) Day Two

Today I sported a pair of summer pants that I haven’t even tried to wear… These super cute aqua American Eagle Khakis.

It's all about these aqua (John says more sky blue) pants.

I'm not sure why I haven't worn them, but I haven't even tried to wear them. I had to wash the creases out of these before I even tried to iron them.

Okay, I like them. A LOT! They were super comfy all day (they did get a hair stretched at the end of the day) and I felt really pulled together in this bright summery outfit.

And I loved mixing them with this bright fuscia scarf.

Consensus... They get to continue to live in my closet. I just need to remember to wear them.

Outfit Breakdown: Aqua Khakis (Thrifted American Eagle (yup these cuties were under $4 last summer at a Goodwill), Cardigan (Banana Republic Outlet),  Scarf (Target), Shoes (same as yesterday DSW), Necklace (Had forever, but I think I originally borrowed it from my pal Carly).

What do you think? Is the aqua (sky blue) to bright or is it just right?

Oh, and my friend Jenni convinced me to join in on the 21 Day Challenge with Freckles in April’s 21 Day Challenge. I’m such a sucker when someone suggests I do something. I mean really just a simple ask and I buy the appetizer or the pedicure upgrade.  So anyway, I will be adding another layer of difficulty to my End of Summer Challenge to Myself.  Stay tuned for my 19 Day Challenge (the real challenge started on Monday).

Love a girls weekend

Have you met my BFF Alison yet? She is so great, such an awesome person to be friends with, totally makes a rainy day at an outdoor festival fun! Alison is also the reason I started running (I don’t consider it a hobby, but it is an excercise I don’t despise), shes the reason I ever watched Sex in the City,  a huge foodie inspiration to me, the best person to watch Love Actually (favorite movie) with…  Love her, we’ve been friends for 9 years, only bummer is, she lives 3 hours away.

Cutest girl I know.

Anyway, over the weekend Alison was here in Grand Haven (she hails from the  Chicago suburbs) and we took in some great casual weekend activities. You know girls night out in Grand Rapids, a craft fair, window shopping in Grand Haven, lakeside wine drinking, and a little wedding planing. Did I tell you that Alison is getting married next summer to a great guy (hey Greg). So happy for them both. Anyway, we spent hours talking about all of her wedding plans and she has even asked me to be a bridesmaid in the wedding. I can’t wait!

Do you love our new summer hats? I even wore mine to our lakeside dinner.

This is my straw hat inspiration… just gotta get the swimsuit (yuck swimsuit shopping) here is the link to where  I found my inspiration.

Back on about the weekend. We both bought our new sea grass summer hats at the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Art Fair. Wow, I have never seen so many people in Grand Haven, EVER.  I can’t believe GH puts on a party that big every year and the art fair was class act! Lots of local and non local vendors, yummy street food (shout out to my chili cheese dog) and even though it poured down rain nearly the entire time I had a great day.

No idea on what is up with the dragon, but when in Holland do as the Hollanders do, pose next to it.

Late night wedding planning. Their wedding is going to be gorgeous.

I hope everyone had a great weekend! Bad news, is today is Monday and it is back to the grind. Good news, Friday is just a few days away. We can make it my fellow working peeps!!

Anyone else get the honor of becoming a bridesmaid this past weekend?
Have any great stories about being outside on a rainy summer day?
Did anyone else have to pay $5 to park 6 blocks away from their own small downtown area? (Love you tourists.)

Cat Fashion Show

I’m in love with my cat.

I have no idea why… she barfed in front of the refrigerator last week, she bites us when we play with her, her little hairs get all over everything, she rarely likes to cuddle, she doesn’t know how to use the toilet, her cat food smells like umm, cat food, she and John have an interesting relationship…

All the same I think she is the best thing ever and I can’t help but squish her until she can’t take it anymore.

Check out Talis’s (short for Talis (as in Talisman) Thomas) most recent modeling session. Gorgeous, she looks ravishing in gray ;). Actually as gray and yellow is the hottest design trend, maybe I’ll get her a new yellow collar to match those yellow eyes.

You obsessed  with your cat too? Share a pic Tali would love to meet a new friend she wont have the pleasure of hissing at.

Green Thumb, NOT

I haven’t a green thumb. I know you are surprised, as I  posted a pic of my nearly dead basil plant earlier this week…

Anyway check out this near dead poinsettia that I have had for 1.5 years! Seriously, two Christmases ago he was gorgeous, until I left him without water for a few days. He nearly died, almost every one of his gorgeous red leaves fell off. A few green leaves lived and I nursed him back to health to his current state.

Can you believe that a poinsettia can even live this long? It’s so ugly, but I have no heart to throw it away. Wouldn’t it be just awful to be a plant and be tossed into the trash still alive, like being buried alive.

Green and Red Thumb

Do you have a green thumb? Have you got any advice on helping my little green and red friend out? I’d love to see him ready for Christmas this year… Please help him.

Perfect summer weekend

What a weekend? No really what a weekend. This was a great weekend. I think the only thing that would have made it better, swimming. Had I taken a dip in Lake Michigan or at least a pool I would have had a complete summer weekend. What did we do you ask?

Friday I finished this project, and took the guest bedroom from this..

Before finishing this project.

to this…

AFTER: Casual cursive lyrics.

AFTER: Casual cursive lyrics.

What do you think? Improvement? I like it, definitely adds to the height of the bed and makes it the focal point in the room. Thank you free project!

I'd say I'm happy with the guest bedroom. On to the bedroom.

Saturday was a complete day, the arrival of John’s Mom and Aunt Dianne. Who got to Grand Haven just in time to hit up our fav breakfast spot and then we headed out antiquity all afternoon. What did I get? Just another deer for my ceramic deer collection and a Ball Jar filled with buttons! I can use these buttons on anything and I saw a cute tutorial for a button clip for my hair. Hmm, maybe soon I will put up my tutorial review on button hair pins. That is if I make some.

Buttons and Ball Jar

For my collection.

We also took the girls out onto my Dad’s boat.

We had a ball! and look at that fish.

Isn’t my Dad a great guy for letting us borrow him to take us for a cruise at sunset?

Thanks Dad.

And I know you wont believe it but we also had a great Sunday, complete with eating ice-cream twice in one day (what else do you do when it’s 90 degrees outside?), and seeing the final Harry Potter.

Do you love or hate it when it is 90+ out there and you melt when put your makeup on? Are you also devastated that after years, you are no longer waiting on the premiere of a Harry Potter book or magazine? Didn’t Neville Longbottom get cute? Are you a fatty too, it’s okay if you are it makes me feel better? FYI Eating ice-cream twice in a day EQUALS serious fatty.

Mascara Review

My name is Kyle and I am a Mascara-aholic!

Literally I love mascara. When I turned 13 my Mom let me wear makeup, but she didn’t buy me makeup… so I just started by wearing her mascara, which turned into mascara and an under eye concealer. Now that I am an adult and buy my own makeup I still can’t leave the house without mascara and an under eye concealer!  I mean I could leave the house, but it’s not really a sight for all eyes.

I’ve got a fav concealer (it’s actually a foundation) and I never change. Oh, and a new compact of this stuff will last me about 6 months! AWESOME.

In Ivory (what can I say I have angel skin)

When it comes to mascara, I have tried them all. I will tell you though, I’m not a big fan of department store mascaras, it’s not the money, it’s the fact that they don’t work any better than the same product and  they do cost far more.  I have used many a Lancome product and if you absolutely have to have a department store mascara, this is the one but it smells weird…

Hypnose Volume Mascara by Lancome (I use brown or brownish black mascara, but I couldn't find a pic)

Back to the subject… I actually like drug store mascaras!! I think I’ve tried them all, I certainly will try anything new. I usually have a couple different brands/tubes going at the same time and I switch it up regularly. I also will not use an old tube! Haven’t you noticed that when mascara gets old it starts to smell? That can not be a good thing. JUST THROW IT OUT even if it did cost you $20!
I do love one brand in particular, Maybelline. They make the best mascaras. I’m sure it all started with this one (the green and pink) which I totally still use. Anyway my current fav is Maybelline’s Falsies which has a patented ‘spoon’ brush. The brush is really different and lends itself to create l beautiful big thick lashes and in my opinion the bigger the better when it comes to lashes. So back to the brush, it actually has regular bristles on one side and has short bristles on the other so you can concentrate on the base of the eye lash to start with the short bristles (creating fullness) and then use the long bristles to create  long and thick lashes. Here is the one I am currently using as my go to mascara, o.O.o and I just had a comment the other day about how thick my eyelashes were…

Do you still rock the pink & green by Maybelline? Any fav brands of mascara? Are you addicted to mascara?

Proud to be a girl named Kyle

I am proud to be a girl named Kyle!

I mean when you are a blond little girl with a short boy-style hair cut and a boy’s name, you get strong. You also get use to repeating your name and listening to people tell you their brother, son, husband, father, grandfather, step father, father in-law (or any other significant boy in their life) has the same name. It’s also always been fun to hear stories from boyfriends about when they told their family, friends or co-workers about a date with Kyle (hahaha).

Here are a couple of stories only a girl with a boys name has…

My next door neighbor growing up was a Kyle (the regular boy kind), so my neighbors always called my Kylelayne as though my first and middle name were just one name.

In the fourth grade I didn’t want to be Kyle J (you know how this happens when two kids in the same class have the same name) so I went by Kylee. Yep, just put an extra E on my name and it was different. Too bad I hated being a Kylee and dropped the E in the fifth grade. Some kids Moms still called me Kylee throughout school.

I once was nearly in a fight with a professor in college. While taking roll he said, “Kyle Johnson?”.

“Here”, I replied.

“No seriously, Kyle Johnson?”.

“I am Kyle Johnson.”

“Stop this, who is Kyle Johnson?”.

“I am Kyle Johnson. I have a boy’s name but I promise I am Kyle and I am here”.

No response to this.

“Steve Johnson?”.

There are plenty more stories about my name, I promise to share them all over time. Now for the real reason behind this post…

Kyle Freeman, another awesome girl named Kyle with great Style (see what I did there?).

Kyle Freeman is a blogger from the Boston area who happens to blog for ApartmentTherapy.com (talk about inspiration). She also happens to have a super sweet pad with tons of color, second-hand finds and homemade items Does that sound like a dream to this girl Kyle? YES it does!

Anyway, I wanted to include a quote from the BHG DIY Magazine (Fall 2011) about Kyle’s feelings towards thrifting, “You’ve got to be willing to work when it comes to secondhand shopping,” she says. “It takes effort to find the really great pieces that make a room.”

I totally agree with this quote. Mainly because it makes my many trips through the same thrift stores valid. I don’t buy something every time, but when I am there to strike on a brand new IKEA frame, or grab up tons of great JCrew t-shirts, and then hear my friends whine about how they never find anything… I will know its the effort I put forward.

Anyway, I love other girls named Kyle! You rock.
